So-Young Kang, Catalyst & CEO of Awaken Group approached us with the brief of designing a book experience that would feature interviews that she conducted with 12 business and governement leaders in Singapore, as the inaugural book publication for their Global Leadership and Innovation Project (GLIP).

With the design constraint of using only Black and White for the interiors to keep the book cost-effective for production, we designed a section of yellow pages that would use a different paper stock in order to add a centrepiece/climax for the book experience.

OCBC “Artist Queue”

OCBC launched a new programme, OCBC Artspace, which sees their banking hall transformed into exhibition space.

The brief: to come up with a concept for external signage that would lead passers-by to walk into the banking hall to visit the ongoing exhibition. The solution: to create an “Artist Queue” in the form of life-sized standees of different artists.

Intersecting Histories

The Art, Design & Media Gallery (ADM Gallery) at Nanyang Technological University underwent a extensive renovation and reopened with Intersecting Histories, a sweeping look at contempory art in Southeast Asia curated by T.K Sabapathy. We were tasked to design the exhibition identity, alongside an accompanying catalogue.

All of the art pieces featured were seminal Southeast Asian works, most of which had a very raw feeling and aesthetic. In particular, one of the exhibition images the curator chose was an arresting sculpture, Bayu Utomo B. Radjikin’s Lang Kacang ; a startling figure without arms, head thrown back with the mouth agape which was made of metal and cement. To complement this and other pieces in the exhibition, we chose Joshua Darden’s Freight Micro for the identity. The typeface’s less refined forms; originally designed to be readable at small sizes, mimicked the raw aesthetic in large sizes.

The book is largely set in Freight Text, and the strict grid gives way to plate sections which are rather playful (and yet considered). We found this dichotomy to be an interesting visual interplay; a delicate balancing act of content and layout.

VDay = BooksActually x Monocle

Fresh out of CNY…
We spent Valentine’s Day at BooksActually’s Monocle Pop-up Shop!

Kudos to Kenny Leck and his team for pulling off such an event! It was really successful with a swarm of book and culture lovers:)

Met quite a few interesting folks including Tommy Ogara, who designs and owns Native Sons eyewear.

We highly recommend that you pop over this weekend!

Buddhist Storytelling

In conjunction with an exhibition on Buddhist Art, the Asian Civilisations Museum published a book featuring a thirty-meter long scroll from their own collection. The scroll, originally used for religious festivities in North East Thailand is a remarkable piece of folk art. We worked with the museum and the author, Leedom Lefferts to bring the entirety of the scroll to life; exploring every detail. The vibrant images are accompanied by essays describing the history of the scroll, the story of Prince Vessantara (which the scroll depicts), and the way of life for the people of North East Thailand. The book is in three main languages; English, Thai, and Thai-Lao, a dialect of Thai spoken in North East Thailand. Various words and phrases were rendered in Pali, Sanskrit and Khmer, which was a typographic challenge we relished!

The exhibition runs till 17 April 2013, and you can see a portion of this scroll on display as well.

NHB: 20 Years of Heritage with You

We developed a consistent branding campaign to commemorate the National Heritage Board (NHB) of Singapore’s 20th anniversary this year. We’re excited because the brand assets we’re creating will be used across the organisation! Yes, that means even in all individual museum collaterals etc.

After a round of proposals, we developed an overall concept which communicated NHB’s festive theme of “Celebrating 20 years of Heritage with You”. This concept included a typographically sophisticated logo that we designed. Its first application was NHB’s 2013 Calendar — the first of many collaterals to come.

Going beyond the conventional “desk calendar”, the calendar packaging had to be elegant yet functional. Thus we designed the very same packaging of the calendar to function as a stand when unfolded. Another interactive feature we designed was the perforation of the calendar pages, so that each month can be torn off and repurposed as a wall graphic or a keepsake.

For our Relay Room Calendar this year, we conceptualized an unconventional calendar, in the form of an A1 wall poster.

It’s peppered with quirky, tongue-in-cheek zodiacal illustrations (we’re not true believers in astrology, if you’re wondering!). There is more than meets the eye, so you really got to give it a closer look to get in on a chuckle or two (Merlion and X-wings feature in somehow!).
